Jack The Giant Slayer

I have been meaning to draw fan art for this gem of 2013 cinema. Directed by Bryan Singer, and based off both Jack and the Beanstalk, and Jack the Giant Killer, this live-action fantasy adventure is exciting and imaginative.

It tells the story of Jack (Nicolaus Hoult) who, along with the great knight captain Sir Elmont (the great Ewan McGregor), must rescue the young princess Isabella (Eleanor Tomlinson) from a oblivious floating island. However, a scheme has been schemed by King Brahmwell’s (Ian McShane… wow, that’s a lot of British actors for an American production) advisor, Lord Roderick (Stanley Tucci, who is American). Roderick (along with his attendant the lovable sick “Wicke”, played by Ewen Bremmer) are looking for the legendary prison of the giants, which is bridged with Earth via the Beanstalk. The leader… leaders (two-heads) of the giants “Fallon” (Bill Nighy and John Kassier), has plans to terrorize the world again. It’s up to the trio of heroes to halt the giant’s hunger and foil Roderick’s sinister plans.

I went to see this in the theatre since I told my brother that I’ll go with him to see it (along with father). I wasn’t as excited at first, but boy did I enjoy it, and believe it as one of Singer’s best films (even if the critics and box-office dictate otherwise). In a year such as 2013, with lesser, dissipating, and even terrible cinematic releases, “Jack the Giant Slayer” is a diamond in the rough and a great contribution to the fantasy genre of 2013 (along with “epic” and “Oz: The Great and Powerful”). Of course, it’s not without flaws. It is banal, but handled better than 2011’s “Three Musketeers” (which was also good). And the giants are well… gross, and graphic…
